Counseling for adults who have experienced loss or life transitions

Loss and Transition Has You Struggling

At this stage of your life, you thought your future looked bright. In spite of various challenges, you have reached middle age and have experienced a bit of success.  You thought you had it all - a good job, a nice home, and the freedom to do whatever you want.  However, the recent news of the loss of your dear loved one has left you feeling numb.  You know you’re supposed to have faith and hope.  Yet, those words and beliefs you’ve been taught seem meaningless and empty.

How do you carry on?

How do you go on with life after this loss, without your primary support, the one who has been there for you your whole life (or you had hoped they’d be there)? You did everything you were supposed to do to build a good life.  Yet, you didn’t learn how to live without your loved one.  You’re used to knowing what to do.  Instead, you’re at a complete loss.

Each day feels more and more difficult to manage due to this change of events.  You’ve had many sleepless nights which prevent you from being your best at work nor are you any good for socializing.  You worry constantly about how you will manage emotionally and how your family will manage now that your loved one is gone.

The emptiness is almost unbearable.

You’re so anxious that you have difficulty concentrating and doing ordinary tasks. You fear you won't be able to manage this loss and your other responsibilities.  It all just feels like too much.  No amount of money or resources can heal your broken heart.  You feel alone and helpless.  You feel like a child in an empty, dark room

I'm Veronica, a black therapist in Nashville who helps people through loss and transition.

As a psychotherapist, I help men and women who have experienced loss of a loved one or life transformation find joy and hope for their future.  In our work together you can:

-reduce your suffering

-get relief from the anxiety symptoms that are keeping you up at night

-learn new skills for how to manage what currently feels overwhelming

-find direction and more confidence in your future

-experience a return of hope

I seek to understand your unique situation and work collaboratively with you to create the best course of action for feeling better. You will feel empowered as you will have a clear direction for what to do next. It will feel like a load has been lifted off your shoulders.

What people say about working with me in counseling

I’m aware that my clients are human, have feelings, and are hurting.  Clients find me easy to talk with and non-judgemental.  I present with warmth, curiosity, and focus.  While my approach to therapy is unique to each client, I used Solution-Focused and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies to understand and address the problem areas.  Our work together extends beyond our weekly therapy appointments. You'll have activities between sessions to solidify what you're learning and to practice what was discussed during each session. We will meet weekly to make sure you have the support you need during this difficult time and to make sure you see the changes you are looking for quickly. Why wait any longer to start feeling better?  My goal is to help you gain the skills and confidence you desire and move toward “graduation” from therapy.  Therapy doesn’t have to be long-term nor does it have to feel scary.  It is work done to move you to a better place.

Frequently Asked Questions About Counseling

  • Counseling and therapy are often used interchangeably. Counseling generally tends to be shorter term and focused on a specific problem area.

Therapy or psychotherapy is done by a master’s level or higher and can often cover a wider range of mental health issues.

    Both can be effective.

Veronica is a licensed marriage and family therapist with a master’s degree in clinical psychology.

  • Everyone has problems and experience sadness, anxiety, and emotional distress at times. However, if these emotions are negatively impacting your family, job, social life, or sense of well being, it may be a good idea to at least consult with a therapist.

  • Since the pandemic, there are many more providers offering virtual sessions. Some advantages to virtual sessions are that there is no need to deal with traffic or parking or other transportation issues. It reduces stigma and allows more access to the services.

In person sessions are more traditional and allow for non verbal communication to exist, provides a safe and neutral environment.

Both have been shown to be effective at addressing mental health issues.

Veronica offers virtual sessions only at this time.
